Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend Clarke Mairs your earsNewcastle’s Theatre Royal has cast Clarke Mairs as the official business sponsor of an exciting new arts project.
The firm is taking centre stage to support a new campaign, to find the North East’s favourite Shakespeare character. This is the first time a British region will nominate its favourite character, and the scheme will celebrate the long running relationship between the Theatre Royal and The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), as the theatre approaches its 175th Anniversary. One of the solicitors from Clarke Mairs will be on the panel appointed to decide the winner, and will also have a seat on the Commissioning Panel for a sculpture of the chosen character to be designed and placed in the Theatre’s Grey Street Foyer. Paul Rushworth, of Clarke Mairs, said: “The Shakespeare project is an excellent way to get the North East communities engaged with the arts and we are thrilled to be involved with the venture.” Leading figures in the region are being invited to make public their choices and it is hoped the idea will benefit local schools by encouraging debates and exploring the dilemmas of the characters. The Journal, an official partner in the campaign, is running a weekly feature on Shakespeare, the plays and their leading characters. Schools participating in a Shakespeare essay competition to be launched early next year will have the opportunity to win editions of the Collected Works. Voting is now open on the Theatre Royal’s website. The character and Play with the most votes will be announced on 23rd April 2011, Shakespeare's birthday. Richard Berg Rust, director of development at the Theatre Royal said: “I'm delighted to welcome Clarke Mairs as business sponsors of this major campaign, celebrating the region's special relationship with Shakespeare. “They are Shakespeare lovers and have offices in the theatre building, so it’s a natural partnership." |
